For male survivors of sexual abuse and/or rape, it is completely understandable that they may struggle both emotionally, and also with managing their lives, as they struggle to contend with the huge emotional devastation that their traumatic experiences caused.
Our team are all highly trained and experienced in working with male survivors and offer confidential, practical, face to face emotional support.
You will be offered up to 12 sessions of Healing Steps work, with sessions taking place for one hour every fortnight at a time that best suits you and meets the availability of rooms.
At the first session, your worker will go through an assessment which is carried out to enable you to identify your needs and set out your goals.
Your worker is there to listen without judgement and work with you to collaboratively identify any areas of your life, and/or issues that you’re currently struggling with. Your Emotional Support Worker will then be able to assist you by offering specialised, practical advice and support for a range of ‘life management problems’, including:
- Reporting to the police
- Ensuring you’re properly supported regarding court processes/proceedings
- Information about compensation and insurance
- Signposting to relevant support services, and other sources of help
- Help in dealing with other services and organisations
- Practical strategies for coping
- Referrals into alternative services
- Budgeting
- Life skills
- Advocacy
With each session we aim to help you achieve a goal, big or small, and will encourage you to practice the skills you learn in the session between meetings.
Over the years, we have found that helping you gather evidence of the changes you are creating and the positive development your engaged with can be extremely useful for those days where you’re feeling crap. So at every session, we will ask you to fill out a small ‘Outcomes Questionnaire’ consisting of 16 short questions. Over the sessions, we will record these and show you how change is happening.
Every third session, we will also ask you to complete another short form that looks at recording changes in the impact of the trauma.
